How Will You Be Selected — Selection Process

Getting selected for SSC CHSL happens in stages. Here is exactly what happens at each stage:

Stage 1 — Tier 1 Written Examination

This was a computer-based test of 200 marks. Candidates who cleared this exam are now eligible for Tier 2.

Stage 2 — Tier 2 Written Examination

This is the main computer-based test. Your final merit list depends on your Tier 2 marks. It has two sessions on the same day.

Session 1 covers:

  • Mathematics
  • Reasoning
  • English
  • General Awareness
  • Computer Knowledge

Is there negative marking?

YES — one mark is deducted for every wrong answer in Section 1 and 2.

Stage 3 — Skill Test and Typing Test

This happens in Session 2 of the Tier 2 exam day. It is only a qualifying round. Your typing marks are NOT added to your final score.

Speed required:

  • English typing: 35 words per minute
  • Hindi typing: 30 words per minute

You need to type on a computer keyboard.

✅ TIP: Practice typing daily on your computer. Free typing practice tools are available online. Even 30 minutes of practice every day is enough to clear the typing test.

Stage 4 — Document Verification

Candidates who clear the Tier 2 exam and typing test are called for document verification. You do not get any marks here. This is just to confirm that your documents are genuine.

ℹ️ NOTE: There is NO interview for this post. Your final merit list is based entirely on Tier 2 written test marks.

Reasoning: Practice 40 to 50 questions daily. Number series, coding-decoding, and syllogism are most common in SSC papers.

English: Focus on grammar, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. Review active-passive voice and direct-indirect speech. These topics carry heavy marks.

General Awareness: Read current affairs of the last 8 months. Focus on Indian polity, geography, and static GK.

Computer Knowledge: This section is qualifying but mandatory. Know MS Word, MS Excel, internet basics, and email. Basic shortcut keys are asked often.

Typing Test: Practice typing for 30 minutes daily. Accuracy is more important than raw speed. Do not look at the keyboard while typing.

The best preparation strategy is solving previous year Tier 2 question papers. Solving 5 to 6 previous papers gives you a clear idea of what topics are most important.
